What Do We Really Know About Candy?

Did you know that eating sugary foods kicks off a chemical reaction in your brain and makes you want to eat more? Sadly, this means that right now, people are eating 3 times the amount of sugar they should be eating per day, unfortunately, this is causing obesity. Obesity means the condition of being grossly fat or overweight. Also, obesity can cause you to live up to 10 years less. Although some would argue that not too many people are obese and also disagree that the candy is bad for you, but, after a lot of research, this expert would say that there are a lot of people gaining obesity just by eating Hershey and Mars candies. Actually, things need to be done about how much sugar is in their candy. Also, some children feel weird if they eat too much artificial coloring, which means made or produced by human beings rather than occurring naturally, typically as a copy of something natural, which is bad for their health. The evidence and facts are laid out, from the high sugar content and how they make it, to all of the health issues, it's clear that Hershey and Mars need to change their candy.

One reason they should change their candys is because of their high sugar content. For example, 1 York peppermint pattie has 25 grams of sugar. In other words, Hershey and Mars candy have way too much sugar than they should. In addition, too much added sugar is bad for the heart. The important thing about this is that people might just be worried about eating too much candy and getting cavities when it can actually affect how long you live. Also, some chocolates contains 3 times as much sugar you should be eating per day. That's not good! Did you know, one serving of m&m’s is 30 grams of sugar? This proves that the amount of sugar in their candy/chocolate is just one of the things they should change. Some people disagree saying that kids need the energy. This expert challenges this claim because only part of that sugar is converted into energy, there is still a lot of leftover sugar.
.
Another reason that the Hershey and Mars company’s should change their chocolate and candy is because of how they make their candies. For example, they use children on cocoa farms and child labor abuse hasn't stopped. The thought I have about this is that they shouldn't have children in the first place but to physically and mentally hurt them is just out of control. Also, children are separated from their families to work on their farms. In other words, they are being forced to separate from their own childhood home.In addition, children are forced to drop out of school to work on the cocoa farms. To add on, the people who are doing this to children need to change what they are doing. Did you know, some children are kidnapped to work on the farms? This shows just another problem that needs to be fixed/ changed. For example, have a law that to work on a cocoa farm, you have to be 18 or older and also make a law that makes it illegal for child labor abuse to happen. In the article, “Despite Efforts, Child Labor Abuse Hasn't Stopped on Cocoa Farms” it states, “...[Cocoa] farmers seek cheap child labor. Government and news reports have described kids forced to drop out of school. Some have even been abducted and made to work without pay.” This awful fact proves the horror that is the behind-the-scenes of the chocolate industry and provides a VERY important reason for both Hershey and Mars candy giants to change how they do business.

A last reason Hershey and Mars company's should change their chocolate and candy is because of the health problems. For example, if you eat too much of their candy, you can get cavities. My sister ate a lot of chocolate and candy for Halloween and when we went to the dentist, she found out she had a lot of cavities. Also, the food dyes that those companies use can cause children to be hyper, gain allergies, and cause aggressiveness. This is giving experts the idea that they are not paying attention to what food dye they use. In addition, food dyes that they are using on the candies right now can cause cancer. This makes experts think about finding another dye to use. Did you know that popular candy dies can cause ADHD(Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)? That is one more thing that Hershey and Mars should change. Critics argue that their are still a lot of health benefits. While this might be true, there are still more health problems than benefits. All in all, because of all the problems, it outweighs the benefits. In the National Public Radio (NPR) Health segment titled “FDA Probes Link Between Food Dyes, Kids' Behavior”, it states, “Researchers have also associated food dyes with problems in children including allergies, hyperactivity, learning impairment and irritability and aggressiveness.”

Skeptics like the Harvard School of Public Health may argue that modest candy consumption can help with living longer. While this fact might be true, many eat too much candy and can get cancer, ADHD, and heart problems which can cause you to live a shorter life. This is caused by too much sugar and food dye. Why risk your life, or risk having other health problems, just because you ate too much candy. You´re just paying the price for someone else's mistakes. Personal insider experience supports this claim. This fifth grader says that every time she eats too much of their candy her stomach hurts very badly. For this fifth grader, this does not happen when she eats too much of other brands of candy/chocolate. The evidence is very clear, Hershey and Mars need to change the food dyes they use and change the amount of sugar is in their products, how they make it, and because of the health problems. If nothing changes, what will happen to people's health?

Living In Colonial Times

Haul someone over the coals – in the Middle Ages, suspected heretics were literally hauled over a bed of burning coals. If they survived they were considered innocent, and guilty if they did not.

Living in colonial times was not like how living is now. Colonists didn’t have cars, planes, trains, video games, or or high tech equipment. The way people did things in colonial times was different from how we do things today. I'll be talking about jobs you had in colonial times. Next, you will be learning about what was dinner like. Last, I’ll discuss who learned more...boys or girls and what happened if you got into trouble. I Hope You Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

  Jobs in colonial times….
If you lived in colonial times you would have a job.
You couldn’t be a professional athlete in the NHL or NFL and you couldn't be a police officer or firefighter. You couldn't have all the jobs you can have now. Some of the jobs you had are

 apothecary.png

Apothecary (making medicine)

The apothecaries of colonial times were similar to today's pharmacists. They made medicines from various minerals, plants, and herbs and sold them in their store. Sometimes they acted as doctors, prescribing medicines for the sick and even performing minor surgeries. Like some drugstores today, the apothecary often sold items besides medicines such as tobacco and cooking spices.

When the first settlers arrived in America they made their own furniture. However, as the colonies grew and became wealthy, cabinetmakers became a specialized trade that made high quality furniture. Popular items included tables, chairs, and desks.

Wigs were an important fashion statement during colonial times. Men of wealth and stature wore large powdered wigs. The wigmaker used human and animal hair to create wigs of various sizes and styles. The wigmaker usually offered other services such as shaving beards or dressing hair.

The chandler was a merchant who specialized in making candles. Candles were an important item in Colonial America because they didn't have electricity for lights. Candles were usually made from tallow, but could also be made from bayberry or myrtle wax. To make a candle, the candle maker would repeatedly dip a wick into heated tallow or wax until the candle reached the desired size. The early settlers made their own candles.
Shoemaking - Wikipediacobbler (making shoes)
An important trade during colonial times was the cobbler who made and repaired shoes. Some larger towns would have multiple different cobblers. Cobblers would often specialize in different types of shoes. They might make just men's shoes or just women's shoes. The most prestigious shoemakers made men's boots.

The cooper made different containers such as barrels, casks, and buckets. These containers were important in colonial times for storing all sorts of items including ale, and wine, flour, gunpowder, and tobacco. The cooper was a skilled trade as these containers needed to be durable and watertight for a long time.

The milliner was the owner of the local clothing store. They sold items for sewing such as cloth and thread. They also made all sorts of clothing accessories including hats, shirts, aprons, hoods, cloaks, and shifts. The milliner was often a woman and was one of the few trades that could be owned and operated by a woman during colonial times.

The gunsmith made and repaired firearms for the town. Gunsmiths had to be skilled in working with both wood and metal. Most of the gunsmiths in colonial times spent their time fixing existing guns rather than making them. New guns were usually imported from England.

Those are a lot of the jobs you could've had if you lived in colonial times and wanted to make some kind of money.
 did-people-eat-southern-colonies_89524bceb5624e61.jpg
Dinner was very different your couldn't sit down when you ate, and you  Couldn't talk at all, not even really say how good or bad your day was. Mostly people ate corn, corn, corn, corn, they turned the corn into corn cake and into corn pudding, The indians taught the people how to plant corn and how to cook corn. If there was nothing to eat the people could always count on corn, And also kids drank beer. And mostly you either corn or some kind of meat.

Who learned more boys-or girls

After dame school, boys went to another school to learn more and girls stayed home. Most people thought is was more important for girls to know how to spin and cook and clean their house. But some people said girls are as clever as boys. “Why” can’t they learn, too? So they taught their daughters at home. Most boys had to go to school. The law said so. The law said every town with fifty families must build a school for boys. But some towns did not have enough money to build a school.

 1303241336_colonial-education-in-america.jpg

What were the schools like?
The law did say schools  had to be comfortable and most of them weren’t. There were hard benches to sit on. The school had only one room, which was freezing cold  in the winter, The only heat came from the fire place. Every boy had to bring firewood for the fire. If he forgot, forgot, he had to sit faraway from the fire. He had to sit in the coldest part of the room. The family of every boy went to school had to pay the schoolmaster. Often he was pain in corn or other food. And to get food you had to kill animals i guess like cows, pigs, chicken and  all those animal that you can get meat from.

Want happened if you got in trouble

IF you got in trouble there were a couple of things you had to do, First they could hang you and kill you. Another is they put you on like this thing that they kept on dunking you into the freezing cold river on and on and on and n again for as long as they felt needed. And another thing you could’ve had to do is you had to wear a tag on your head or chest or whatever and on the sign it would say want bad thing you did. Some things you could’ve gotten in trouble for were you could’ve stole something or killed someone or something like an animal or something like that.

Conclusion

As you can see life was different in colonial times, As I told you about ,What happened if you got in trouble, Who learned more Boys or girls and What was dinner like in Colonial Times? And    Jobs in Colonial Times…. So I hope you enjoyed and have a great day and last.

Question: Why was why life so different?

Any questions???????

AND THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Blood Draw

It was a school day in Boise. It was also the day that would change the way I see myself forever. It was a school day and I wasn’t sick yet, I was home gazing out the window. I was home because I wais getting a blood draw that day. I was so nervous about the blood draw that I just wanted to grow wings and fly out of the house. Or maybe become invisible. My dad would never find me.  I did not want this to happen but I knew it had to. Soon my dad called to me telling me it was time to go. I gulped. I went to my room grabbed a few thing then went to the front door.
“I’m nervous.” I said to my dad.
“I know” he replied.
We went outside got in the car and we drove away. Here we go. I thought as we drove to the hospital. I was not thinking that this was the day that I would be learning anything new about myself. I was thinking about how nervous I was and how this was the worst day ever. I also didn’t notice that I had forgotten my favorite stuffed animal Lamby.
Soon Saint Luke's  Hospital was in view. This is the place that the worst part of my day is going to happen. I thought when I saw the hospital. We drove into the underground parking lot. Dad parked the car and looked at me. “Ready for this.” he asked me.
“No!!!” was my answer. I said it in my head though. I took a deep breath. We climbed out of the car walked to an elevator took it up got out and walked across the street.
We went through the revolving doors. As we climbed the stairs I still was not aware that this blood draw would majorly affect my life. After we climbed the stairs we sat down and waited. (We were not checked in yet.) I kept my eyes on all the entrances because my teacher could come through anyone at any moment. (I had wanted my teacher to come and she said she would.)
Soon my dad took me to the check in counter.  After we were all checked in we took our seats. I went over to the place we had been at before. A bit later I saw my teacher come through one of the doors. I ran to my dad to tell him she was here. Before I continue there are somethings you should know. #1 I’m in 4th grade in this story. #2 My class was working on a project called mouse house. We were basically making mini house. #3 That day was presenting day.
My teacher was showing me some pictures of the mouse house. Apparently the first graders had came to see the house because in the pictures there were first grader. (This includes my little sister Madeline.) I noticed that my sister was in a lot of the pictures. My teacher commented on this. “Did you think I was going to be showing you pictures of your sister.” We laughed.
Soon the doctor called me in. I panicked because I noticed that I forgot Lamby. “I can't do this because I  forgot Lamby!” I said. I also panicked because it was about to happen. If only I could disappear, fly, or become invisible. If I could do one of those things I wouldn’t have to do this. I thought as we followed the doctor.
The doctor led us into a room and asked me to take a seat. “I can’t do this.” I said
“Why don’t you sit on your dad lap.” The doctor said. I ended up sitting in my dad lap. (I think he had to wrestle me though.) The doctor told me to close my eyes so I did. I screamed things like “Take it out. I don’t feel good. Take It out now.” My teacher held my hand the whole time though.
Red bandage on my arm I was rushed to the waiting room. I layed on the seat we had sat at.  A  lady got me some apple juice. (Which was really nice of her.) My teacher bent down and in a sternish voice she told me that she was glad she came because she got to see me be so brave. That cheered me up a bit. She left right after that. Soon me and dad left to. He told mom how it had gone. He also told me that I’d been really brave. I told him that I was not. He said that once he had a blood draw and he grabbed onto the chair. They had to pull him off. He took me out for a treat.
Later we went to the doctor and he told us the results. That was the day I learned I had something. (Not saying because it is private.) To this day I still have to get blood draw almost ever time I go to the doctors even though I wish I didn’t have to.
That day I learned that being brave is not whining or crying it’s go through things that are tough, scary, or hard. I also learned that I had a pretty awesome teacher.

Lake Compounce

It was a cool, windy, soft-skyed morning, which was nice in the middle of July. I could not wait to get to spend lots of fun time with my friends. I felt like my head would explode with happiness! It was the last day of the church’s Carnival Week, and the whole camp was looking forward to getting to the spotlight of Carnival week, Lake Compounce!
Soon, everyone boarded the bright yellow bus. Everyone was so excited to get there. “Cozzette! Olivia! Audrey!” I waved for my friends and sister to come and play games with me, I always remember one of our favorite road trip traditions, the fun and games tradition. It was when every time we were on road trips, we all played hand games, like zoo, handshake, lollipop, pika, and things like tic-tac-toe. All the counselors, kids, and friends joined in! A few hours later we arrived at Lake compounce, the start of carnival week, fun with friends.
Once the  long bus ride was over, all the best friends split up into groups, Cozzette, one of my best friends, was with me. As we opened the map, we saw a nice variety of ride choices. “Let’s ride this one first!” cozzette and lots of other girls exclaimed.
“Why?” I asked,
“Because, silly! It spins you to make us cooler!”
Then I noticed how hot it had gotten since we left church. “GOSH!” I yelled in realization, “you’re right! It’s burning!”, Cozzette smiled nicely,
“I know!” she laughed. “The weather today is super crazed! Like it wants to kill us!” she joked.
On the way to Zoomerang, we stopped by a drink place where everybody laughed and got free root-beer, sprite, juice, mist, and, of course, water. “No lay-offs now” Jessica laughed with a cup of root-beer in her hand,  “We will go straight to zoomerang!” We all agreed.
“I am so nervous” Cozzette said abruptly
“Me too,” I replied, “Although, for me, once it's over, I feel like doing it again. Hey,” I suddenly exclaimed, This looks just like Flashback!”
“What’s that?” everyone asked
“Oh, it’s a roller coaster like this, but red and orange, not this, all blue and purple,” I clearly stated since I saw the roller coaster.
“If you know so much about it,” Jessica started, “ then where is it located? And I mean it as nicely as possible” Jessica added
“It’s at six flags” I said.
We all hugged each other, because it seemed like a nice place to hug. It was nice, pretty, and it had lots of flowers. So our group laughed and talked some more all the way there, as a very happy group.
Finally, the long walk was over, and we arrived at  (heavenly chorus singing  Ahhhhhhhhhhh)  Zoomerang, it looked like flashback, yes, but it was 5 times bigger!
Once we were on the marvelous roller coaster, we all chatted and Cozzette hugged me tightly, then, all of us decided to make a tradition about Zoomerang, the tradition was that we would always ride it first, above any ride, and we all joyfully agreed. After the ride Cozzette thanked me for always being there for me, so I replied
“That’s what friends are for,”
And in that one moment, everyone smiled, happy that their friends were there for them.
Soon we were at the water park where we could meet up with younger or older friends or relatives, so, naturally, Cozette, Livvy, Audrey and I all changed into our bathing suits and rushed to the pool,
“Goodness, the ground is burning!” We all agreed and ran to the pool skipping as high as we could to avoid the scorching hot ground.
Finally, after what seemed like burning hot minutes we ran into the water, which, gratefully, was super cool against out sunburned feet.
“Come on!” Audrey exclaimed happily, “The waves are on!”
And Audrey was right, the artificial waves caused purposely by sudden outbursts every 15 minutes, made for people to jump on, where on,
“Jump Time!” We all yelled with glee.
Then in that moment, jumping waves, I remembered the time I got to go on a summer vacation with my family to Bermuda, and I went wave-jumping with my mommy, daddy, and sister, Audrey, those where the good old days, when my cute, but helpless baby brother, Grant didn’t exist.
And I remembered how my family was always so amazing to me and cherished this moment at Lake Compounce.
Later that day we boarded the bright yellow bus, and all I could think about was how much I loved spending quality time with friends and family. So, naturally, we played hand games for the long, fun, beautiful, and colorful journey home with my best friends. I knew how much I loved my life, with all my great surprises. I loved my family, friends, and acquaintances.
