Well, in this book you will learn a lot about the chicken. You will learn facts about the chicken “like the fact I just told you,” all about the egg and the process of a chick can being born..
Facts about the chicken
In this chapter I will talk to you about lots of interesting facts about the chicken and about chickens.
Chickens are domestic birds that can't fly . There are hens, which are the females, and roosters that are males. Chicks that are the babies. And bantams that are miniature chickens that only grow about half the size of a regular chicken. The scientific name for the chicken is Gallus domesticus. “ Did you know that chickens legs are developed from dinosaur legs?” Well i did not know that either. But it is because birds have developed from bird-like dinosaurs.

A group of chickens is called a flock. And roosters are brightly colored and have a large comb. A comb is the rubber looking usually red thing at the top of their head. Also, roosters make loud crowing sounds and can be quite aggressive. The eggs can be brown, white, blue, pink, green, and other pale colors.
They like to eat insects, worms, fruit, seeds, acorns, grains, slugs, snails, vegetables, meat, and more. So that they can eat this food, they have something called a gizzard. It is part of their stomach that contains stones to grind up food. This is because chickens don't have teeth. Their predators are usually skunks, owls, racoons, hawks, snakes, coyotes, bobcats, opossums, and people.
They also have wattles that hang their neck, earlobes on the side of their head, claws, and rich blood supply. They weigh from 1.1 pounds to 11 pounds and their eggs are used in many vaccines. That is lots of facts about the chicken.
The Egg
This chapter is about the process of laying a chicken egg.
To lay the egg the egg starts as just a yolk inside of the hen. The yolk is produced by the hens ovary in a process called ovulation. Ovary is where the egg are produced. The yolk is released into the oviduct where it can be fertilized internally by a sperm. Oviduct is a long spirally tube in the hens reproductive system. The yolk continues down the oviduct and is covered with a membrane, structural fibers, and layers of aluminum. This part of the oviduct is called the magnus. As the egg goes down the oviduct it is continually rotating within the spiraling tube. The movement twists the structural fibers which form rope-like strands that anchor the yolk in the egg white. There are 2 chalazae anchoring the yolk on opposite ends of the egg.
The eggshell is deposited around the egg in the lower part of the oviduct of the hen before it is laid. The shell is made of calcite a crystalline form of calcium carbonate.
This entire trip takes about one day according to what kind of chicken it is that is laying the egg.
