Florida
I was seven and I was at my grandparents Florida house, staying there for 10 days.
Today it was going to be the best day ever because my cousins were coming over for a family party. Right now I am sitting in my grandparents living room with a knot in my stomach and so many ideas were swirling around in my head like a giant tornado that made me so nervous.
You guys are probably wondering why I'm nervous, well it is because me and my cousin Sydney are really close and we have all of these traditions together. I haven´t seen Sydney in a year so I'm worried that maybe Sydney doesn´t want to do the traditions anymore. I am just hoping that she does.
¨Ding Dong¨ the doorbell rang. I watched as my parent´s opened the door, and out came my Aunt, Uncle, Sydney, and my two other cousins.
¨ Umm… Hi Brooke!! Ready to do the traditions again well, if you still want to do them??¨ I was shocked that Sydney still loved the traditions that we do.
¨ Sure I'd love too!!¨ I replied.
One tradition that Sydney and I have is that we put on a Florida show for the adults and every year we go in my grandparents bedroom to practice the show.
So when me and Sydney were walking to my grandparents bedroom Sydney turned to look at me and said. ¨ Before I came here I was wondering if you would still do the traditions with me. But I'm just glad you still do.¨ Sydney said in a shy tone.
¨ I was thinking the same thing.¨ I replied.
5 seconds later we just started hysterically laughing out of nowhere.
¨ I think that we should do gymnastics in the show don't you?¨ Sydney asked as we were in my grandparents bedroom. I could tell that Sydney wanted me to say yes.
¨ Sure?¨ I exclaimed in a questioning voice.
About half an hour later of practicing cartwheels, handstands, and flips, me and Sydney looked at each other in a ¨it´s time look.¨
“Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, please welcome the tumbling girl’s.” Sydney shouted in a different voice.
As me and Sydney walked to the center of the audience and the living room, everyone started to clap, whistle, and cheer. I could feel my face turning as warm as the sun.
1 minute later me and Sydney started doing jumps, flips, handstands, and cartwheels in front of the audience. Even though I wasn’t really good at any of them except for the jumps and handstands.
Sydney and I did our last jumps then done. Everyone was clapping and cheering as we took a bow.
“Thank you!!! Thank you!!” Sydney said to the adults as we were moving on to our next tradition.
Our next tradition is that every year after we do the show, we go back into my grandparents bedroom and jump on the beds.
So as Sydney and I were jumping on the beds, by accident I tripped and fell on my back on the rug. It didn’t hurt at all because the rug was there, but me and Sydney thought that it was pretty funny.
5 minutes later me and Sydney kept on jumping off the beds on our backs.
“Brooke I’m having so much fun!!!” Sydney shouted.
“ Me too!!” I shouted back but it was so hard to hear each other from all of the laughter coming out of me and Sydney’s mouth. We were falling off the beds like crazy monkeys. Me and Sydney were having a blast.
“ Ready for the last tradition??” Sydney asked
“You bet!!”
Our last tradition after jumping on the beds is swimming in my grandparents hot tub!!
“Come on Brooke last one to the hot tub is a rotten egg!!”
Me and Sydney took off our clothes, quickly slipped on our bathing suits, and ran to the hot tub.
“ Ahh!!! The hot tub feels like a million soft blankets on top of me!!!” I exclaimed. Sydney nodded her head in agreement.
There was silence but then all of a sudden Sydney blurted out, “Splash FIGHT!!!”
Pretty soon me and Sydney were having a major splash fight!!
“ Best DAY EVER!!” Me and Sydney said at the same time.
“ Brooke and Sydney I’m glad you’re having a great time, but it is time to eat.” My mom called from the door to the hot tub. Me and Sydney grabbed our towels, dried off, and put our clothes back on.
Meanwhile me, Sydney, and my brother were sitting at the kid table in the kitchen, while the adults got to sit at the dining table. Sydney, me and my brother were a little offended that the adults thought that we were kids even though we were 7 and my brother was 3.
“Oh I’m an adult I’m so special so I get to sit at the dining table”. Sydney said mocking the adults.
After we ate the adults were still eating so we started doing stuff like balancing spoons on our noses, telling jokes and riddles, and playing hide and go seek.
Finally we had dessert, and Sydney’s dad said that they had to go home. Everyone said goodbye, but as Sydney was walking out the door she turned to look at me and said “No matter how old we get or how long we see each other, we will always have our traditions. Can’t wait until next year. Bye.” She gave me a hug then left.
I thought back to what Sydney had said to me and that made me realize that traditions are traditions that will never go away.
Even now that I’m ten which is 3 years later I still do the traditions that I did with Sydney 3 years ago and never again will I worry about Sydney not doing traditions with me.
