Did you know that George Herbert Walker Bush was a resident of Maine? He was born in Massachusetts. He spent many summers in Maine with his family when he was a child. His family had an estate in Kennebunkport, Maine. When he was president many important people came to visit him in Maine. President Bush is important because he served in the navy, he had government jobs, and he was a strong leader when he was president.
He served in the navy in 1943 during World War II. He was the youngest bomb pilot in the navy. He also made very dangerous flights in the war. He was shot down on one of the flights. While he was in the navy he won 4 medals for the most bravery. After he helped train new navy pilots.
After working in the oil business he wanted to work in the government. Before becoming president, he had different jobs in the government. He lost his first election. In 1966, he won his second election and he worked in the House of Representatives in Congress. Bush worked in the United Nations and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Bush was President Reagan's vice president for 8 years. In 1988 he was elected President of the United States of America. He was the 41st president of the country.
President Bush was a great leader. Saddam Hussein was the leader of Iraq. Iraq did not have the money to pay back the countries he needed to. He was going to get the money from the oil in Kuwait. Hussein captured Kuwait. President Bush sent thousands of troops from different countries to protect Saudi Arabia from Iraq. Iraq refused leave Kuwait. President Bush ordered the troops to bomb bridges, highways, and airports. After this, Iraq dumped the oil into the Persian Gulf and set oil wells on fire. Many fish and birds died and the oil was wasted. There was air pollution and acid rain too. After this happened, President Bush ordered the soldiers to attack Iraq. The fighting lasted only four days. Iraq’s soldiers surrendered. This fighting was called the Persian Gulf War. He helped protect Saudi Arabia.
