Milton Hershey
Have you ever taken a bite of Hershey’s chocolate and wondered where it came from? Well, Hershey’s chocolate came from Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hershey’s chocolate is some really tasty chocolate. Milton S. Hershey was the one who founded the chocolate. He started Hershey’s business in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Milton S. Hershey was a very important person because he was a philanthropist, he popularized chocolate, and he lived right next to a dairy farm so he could use fresh milk in his chocolate.
Milton Hershey was a philanthropist. He started a school for male orphans. The school had grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. It was originally named the Hershey Industrial School. It was one of the wealthiest schools in the world. Hershey’s brother and his friend Nelson were the first to enroll at the school. By 1914, 40 boys attended the school. While on vacation, there was also a summer school where the boys could learn to make things. They also got a job to work on the dairy farm. Milton Hershey gave his entire fortune-$60 million-to the school. He continued to be so involved in the school until his death in 1945.
Milton Hershey was the person who popularized chocolate. Before Milton Hershey created Hershey’s chocolate, people didn’t really like chocolate. They would buy it, but they did not really love it. When Hershey’s chocolate came around people started buying it like crazy! They loved it so much that every other chocolate that was made actually got bought. So, the other chocolate companies, really have to thank Milton Hershey for this.
Milton S. Hershey lived right next to a dairy farm. Because he lived next to a dairy farm, he was able to use fresh milk in his chocolate. The milk at the dairy farm was fresh because they had just milked the cows. Milton Hershey was able to get the milk right after that. Some chocolate companies did not have that opportunity so some of the milk that was used in their chocolate, wasn´t as fresh. They just bought the milk. Because it wasn´t fresh, it affected the chocolate.
