KEEP THE CANDY

Can you believe that an average of over one billion Hershey bars are sold every  year in the USA? That’s about 83,333,333 bars a month! Some may argue that chocolate is packed full of sugar, but for one it really isn’t, and two the sugar that actually is in it gives the adult or child that eats it more energy for the rest of the day. Isn’t it weird how just a tiny bit of a chocolate bar can do so much? Some people have even had protests to shut down the Hershey’s and Mars companies. I don’t think this is a good idea because their chocolate has many health benefits, many people are employed from working at the company's factories, and lastly because several people like their candies and it has much sentimental value. For instance, my grandfather died when I was five, and his favorite thing in the whole world to eat was a york peppermint patty.

One reason, that Hershey’s and Mars companies should keep making their candies the same way they have been is that their chocolate has many heart benefits. For example, cocoa helps with memory loss. As I say this I say this, I'm realizing that if people are going to eat chocolate they will also have a better chance at not having memory loss. Also, peppermint helps you concentrate better, such as when you are driving or taking a test. Perhaps, this is partly why there are mints you can take at the exit of a restaurant, so that when you are driving home from the restaurant you got the mint at, you would be focused and steady while driving your car. In addition, chocolate and it’s ingredients increases blood flow. In other words, the chocolate you eat helps your heart without you even knowing. Lastly, can you believe people who eat candy and/or chocolate several times a month are proven to live almost a year longer? So by spending just about $20 each year, you could add just about 365 more days to your life line. Don’t you think that’s fascinating?

Another reason that the Hershey’s and Mars candy companies should keep making their candies as is, is because companies and employees get paid a lot of money each year to keep producing these delicious treats. For instance, in 2016 12.6 billion dollars were spent on just plain chocolate in the USA. That means that many people  love their candy, so they should definitely keep making it. Also, 71 million pounds of chocolate was sold leading up to Easter in just 2016. Therefore, Easter is obviously a very big candy holiday in America. I know that some people don’t celebrate Easter or just don’t care for chocolate, but for all the people who do that’s why we have it. Another reason, is in 2015 America spent 2.1 billion dollars were spent on just Halloween candy. Halloween also seems like a huge candy holiday. Lastly, in 2012, 407,409,600 snicker bars were sold. One snickers bar is sold for 89 cents, so selling 407,409,600 of them would equal $362,594,544. Isn’t that shocking for just selling one kind of candy in one year!

A final reason that the Hershey’s and Mars companies should keep making their great, scrumptious candies the same way without any changes is the popularity and sentimental value. For example, Reece's is the #1 rated Halloween candy company in the world. I remember last year, in 2016, I was trick-or-treating with my two best friends, Melayha and Lilah. We had the best time going around knocking on doors asking for candy. I absolutely love reese's so to surprise me they both gave me all the reese's they had collected that night.  Also, M&M was rated the 2nd most popular Halloween brand. This shows me that many people must enjoy that certain candy.  Another reason is that just America spent 1.7 billion dollars on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Wow! America must love a lot of people! “ Americans are chocoholics!” says CNBC, one of the major news companies in the world. If CNBC is saying that America loves chocolate than I definetly would listen.

“Candy is childhood, it holds the best and brightest moments you wish could have lasted forever.” said Dylan Lauren, a business woman in the candy and chocolate industry in America. In other words, many memories have been made with candy possibly more than without. So now I have stated my, hopefully persuasive, three reasons. The Hershey’s and Mars company's candy has many health benefits, their companies employ many people, and let’s face it, society loves pretty much everything they do. My family definitely loves it.  That is why the Mars and Hershey’s companies should just keep doing what they have been doing all along. This fifth grader definitely agrees with most everything those companies do. Do you want these delicious chocolates to be taken away? I know there are some people in the world who don’t like chocolate at all, but just think about it. A world without chocolate. So the next time this topic comes up at the dinner table or even if it ever gets to the point when this argument is posted on the front of a billboard, what will you say?
