Chapter One:
Introduction
“...the Roanoke valley where mountains hold the breath of the dead between them and lift
from each morning a fresh bandage of mist.” This dreary quote by Carolyn Forche, author of The Country Between Us, describes how creepy and mysterious Roanoke was and still may be today. The arrival of the people at Roanoke, the challenges they faced, and the mystery about the colony make it a really big mystery in history.
Chapter Two:
Their Arrival
One day a group of English people from England were seeking a better life. They traveled for miles and miles to an island near North Carolina. When they arrived at the destination they shot two cannons in the air to show their arrival. They named their island Roanoke because they named it after the natives that lived there before them. I wonder if they named Roanoke after the Indians because they wanted to be friends.
Chapter Three:
CHALLENGES
The Roanoke citizens had lots of challenges. One was hunting. When the colonists arrived, they found out that they didn't know how to hunt. I wonder why would they come unprepared, not knowing how to hunt? Perhaps, because only rich men came to start the colony, they were used to having servants do work for them.
Another trouble was the lack of supplies. They did not have enough food and water to last through the season. As a result, John White, the governor of the colony, left for England to go get more supplies when John White left to England he promised to be back in the spring but was delayed three years doing to war.
Chapter Four: WHY IT IS THE LOST COLONY?
When John White returned he saw smoke coming from the colony. When he arrive to the island he went to check the colony he saw no sign of them all he saw was the burning houses. John White sent men to go looking for the missing colonist but there was no trace except of the word CROATOAN John Smith thought they might be at the island CROATOAN. John Smith ordered everyone to get on board the ship when they were riding to the CROATOAN a huge storm broke out so they had to return to England.
Theories
There are many theories about what really happened to the colonists of Roanoke. No one really knows because it is a mystery. Some people think that when the colonist arrived to CROATOAN they were eaten or starved to death or they were eaten by cannibals.
Chapter 5:
CONCLUSION
Isn’t it strange that the colonist left but never returned?. When John White returned he saw fire coming from Roanoke and a tree that said CROATOAN. Could they have went to the island but did not survive. But why did the colonist leave Roanoke? And were they really friends with the natives Americans?
