Animals of OhioFree photo Bison Buffalo National Park Yellowstone - Max Pixel

Do you like animals? Because if you do, you should definitely visit Ohio. In Ohio there is tons of nature and amazing intelligent animals.

Bison are one of these animals. They are huge, furry and brown with small horns and long hair.
Bison horns are made naturally from the same material as human fingernails!

Bison are important because they eat weeds that can kill other plants. They also were useful in Native American history. The Native Americans used to kill bison for food supplies, tents, blankets, and clothes! File:American Bison AdF.jpg - Wikimedia Commons

A Bison tends to live in meadows, mountains, and certain types of woodland areas. They like water and eat grass, plants, certain types of leaves, and other vegetation.

Bison are very strong and powerful when they are adults, but when they’re calves it’s an entire different story.
Calves (baby bison) are smaller and less furry than adult bison. They are also weaker when fighting. Since a calf can’t protect itself the other bison protect it instead. For instance, when a coyote or a predator that is large enough to attack or kill a calf comes, the adult bison form a circle around the calf so the coyote can’t get to it. I think that this proves Bison are smart to know how to protect a helpless calf against a grown and powerful predator.Free photo: Bison Calf, Buffalo, Baby, Wild - Free Image on ...

Even though Bison are incredibly, intelligent and, in some cases, good for the environment, there is an overpopulation of them in some states.

Now that you know all about bison, it’s time for you to learn about a certain species of bird with the title of the American bittern. This bird is brown with white stripes and long lanky feet. They have a huge tan beak and live in marshlands and swamps.   Free picture: American, bittern, bird

American bittern are an endangered species due to the loss of their beautiful wetland habitat. You can still see these birds in cities throughout Ohio and other places in the Midwest. American Bittern Nest | I was lucky to stumble upon this nes… | Flickr
American bittern lay pale gray or tan legs that are protected in a large roomy and sturdy nest. American bittern like to be by the water in their habitat. Unlike many other birds, American bittern make their nests on the ground in an area with long grass and lots of undergrowth.

American bittern are intelligent birds to think of what type of land they want to build their nests on. I think this because if the American bittern built their nest in the open where it’s not hard to find, a predator could eat the American bittern eggs or kill the baby chicks in the nest.Bear Swamp County Park (1) | Dense wetland vegetation, Bear … | Flickr

The last animal I will be talking about is not the fastest animal in the world…it’s actually not that fast at all... (Aside from when it’s in water.)  This reptile is the woodland box turtle. It has yellow stripes on its face and a dark gray shell. These turtles sometimes have red eyes, and they are a species of concern in Ohio due to drivers.

The woodland box turtle eats a variety of different things such as herbs, algae, and some berries. Box turtles can also be fed human food like strawberries, lettuce, and other plants.

Box turtles are prey to owls and many other birds.
Box turtles outsmart their predators by diving deep into the water and camouflaging with the aquatic plants under the water.  Box turtles are very smart to know how to hide from tons of predators. Especially when they are so slow!

I hope that you visit Ohio and all of these wonderful animals who live there.
